Find Cheap Laptops for Students

The advancing technology has enabled automation of complex processes, mechanization of mundane tasks and made life a lot easier. Computers and the Internet are two of the greatest gifts of technology to mankind. They have redefined living and made the world a better place to live in. Thanks to the invention of laptops, computing is no longer limited to huge workstations and stationary desktops. It has taken a huge leap and has introduced to mankind, the concept of mobile computing. Following the advent of mobility in computing, the world realized its utility and notebook computers became popular for personal and professional use. Today, they are being used even by college-going students.

Youngsters make use of laptops for different purposes. They use notebook computers for both studies and recreation. Laptops are the means to connect to the world through the Internet; to socialize, to study, to gather information from the web and have access to the world at their fingertips. Computers are the need of today and even better if one can use them when mobile. Laptops satisfy this need. They enable mobile use of computer technology. But laptops don’t come cheap. Not everyone can afford big-budget laptops. The student crowd prefers to go for cheap ones, in order to balance their expenditure. As many students have to do with a restricted amount of pocket money, they cannot afford to go for expensive notebook computers. Most of them stay away from their families and have to manage their own expenses. This restricts them from splurging on costly laptops. What should they do? Do they have to be deprived of the bounties of technology? Is there no solution to their difficulty in buying an expensive laptop? Well, there is! There’s no need to worry; for there are multiple options for buying cheap laptops without having to compromise on anything.

Student’s Guide to Buying Cheap Laptops

Buy from a Power User
One way to buy an inexpensive laptop is to purchase it from a power user or gamer. People who use notebook computers for gaming purposes want cutting-edge technology. They tend to change laptops within short spans of time. Buying from them puts you in a win-win situation as you get a laptop with a good feature set and that too for less money. They sell off their laptops within a year or two after purchase, as their power-hungry applications and games need higher-end technology. These users often take good care of their laptops, so you have bright chances of getting a laptop which is in excellent condition. Ask around; great if you have power user friends. Visit gamer forums or local gaming communities online and go to their sales section. You might find posts from gamers wanting to sell their laptops. Go for them!

Refurbished Laptops for Students
Another economical means to buying a new inexpensive laptop, is purchasing a refurbished one. Inexpensive refurbished laptops should not be underestimated just because they are low-priced. In fact, reconditioned laptops offer the same features as those of brand new ones. It is a myth that they are in bad condition. In buying refurbished laptops, you can take advantage of their high depreciation value and get home just a few-years-old laptop at a considerably low price. Visit Craigslist and eBay; you may find good laptop deals there. Keep checking local bulletin boards, especially so, if you have software companies in the locality. Generally big firms put used computers for sale and you will find such offers quite frequently.

Older Technology
A good option for students is to go for slightly older technology. When you know that computer technology is advancing at an exceptionally fast rate, there is no point in spending big bucks on the latest. It’s sure to become old within the next few months. A better alternative is to go for older technology or settle on less features. Perhaps you can adjust with less RAM, a relatively lesser hard disk capacity, or a slightly lower-resolution screen, depending on your usage requirements. Stick to only what you need. Features like 3D, facial or fingerprint recognition can be skipped, thus saving you some money on the laptop. Get a video card only if you plan to use the laptop for gaming purposes. Get a DVD burner. You can save by not opting for a BD burner. Differentiate between need and luxury!

Student Discounts
Many laptop companies offer discount coupons and rebate schemes for students. Like corporate and military discounts, websites like usanotebook offer educational discounts on laptops. Avail of them. Even Apple offers educational discounts, which you can avail of, if you buy their product, say a Mac. If you are ready to spend something above $500, Macbook could be a good choice. But a Windows laptop is cheaper than a Mac. Computer manufacturers like Dell and HP offer good laptop deals throughout the year. Approaching the manufacturers directly lets you save on intermediate costs. Also, you can get the laptop customized to your requirements if bought from the manufacturer. Websites like gottadeal, dealtaker and slickdeals have attractive bargain schemes and discount coupons. Many laptop dealers come up with lucrative offers for laptop buyers in order to increase their sales. Don’t miss such opportunities.

When to Buy
During Thanksgiving, especially on the Black Friday, you will find several lucrative offers on literally everything. Be on the lookout for cheap laptop deals during this time of the year. The other good time to buy an inexpensive laptop is just before a new technology is to be released. All you need to do is keep your eyes open and keep track of the sales offer that suits you best.

Things to Remember

  • Before buying a laptop, check your school/college website. See if they recommend a specific operating system or certain specifications.
  • Once you decide whose (which manufacturer) laptop you are going to buy, search on the web with the name plus coupons and you might land on some good discount offers on the laptop of your choice.
  • Remember to compare different offers in terms of their cost-effectiveness. Participating in online forums related to laptop purchase and scanning through bulletin boards for laptop deals, can help you get the best bait.
  • Buy addons and computer accessories separately, instead of buying them with the laptop. That way they come cheap. Buy them online and well in advance instead of purchasing them from university bookstores. You will find them relatively inexpensive that way. Even with an external hard drive, consider buying it separately instead of buying it integrated with the laptop.
  • Security software, you will need to buy, but go for one like Microsoft Security Essentials which is downloadable and comes for free. Don’t spend on additional security and protection software.

Make sure you choose an authorized dealer for the laptop deal. It is advisable for students to seek guidance from someone with knowledge of computer buying. Weigh your usage requirements against the laptop’s features and price and get home that technological wonder you had been craving for since long – a laptop!

Tips on Using the Print Screen Key

The print screen key is a seemingly dormant one, and it is rarely used. Different computer manufacturers have different methods of naming this key, but its location is pretty much constant in every keyboard. Its position is right after the function keys, and there are many people who think that pressing it directly commands the computer to take a printout of the current screen. This is not true, as its function is to take a screen snapshot, and to store it on your clipboard for further use. The clipboard is an invisible medium that comes into play, whenever we are transferring files or folders. Whenever we cut or copy something, the item is temporarily stored on the clipboard, before we actually paste it elsewhere.

  • Open the screen that you wish to copy.
  • Now, press the print screen key (‘PrtScn’), and the mirror image of that screen will be stored on your desktop.
  • Open an image editing application like Microsoft Paint.
  • Paste the screenshot in this application either by pressing Control + V, or by going to the Edit menu and selecting Paste.
  • You can either enlarge this image, or you can even crop it, according to your requirement.
  • Save the file at a suitable location, and it is now ready for use. You can either view it and use it for some other purpose, or you can even send it to another person.

You can even use this method on laptops for a similar purpose. Various laptop brands have differing nomenclatures and positions for this key.

The image will be saved in the Bitmap (.bmp) format. You can also change the format to GIF. Do not use the JPEG format, as it makes the text appear as unclear and blurry. You can press ALT + PrtScn to copy a screenshot of a selected window on your monitor, instead of the entire screen itself. This means that you don’t have to crop the picture in your image editing program.

Using Print Screen in Mac OS
An Apple Mac is very different from a machine using Windows XP or Windows Vista Operating System, and it doesn’t consist of a print screen button. But, the method of taking a screenshot is slightly different from that of a Windows-based computer.

Method # 1
Open the screen that you wish to capture.
Press the ‘Apple’ key + Shift + 3.
Click on the window.
The image of your screenshot will be automatically saved on your desktop.
Method # 2

  • This is for capturing just a portion of your screen.
  • Open the screen and press the Apple key + Shift + 4.
  • The mouse cursor will change to a “+” sign. You can use it to drag and highlight the area that you want to capture.
  • After this, the screenshot image will be saved on your desktop.

Method # 3

  • This method is used to capture a screenshot of a particular application window.
  • Open the screen and press the Apple key + Shift + 4.
  • The mouse cursor will change to “+”. Press Space bar once, and the cursor will further change to the shape of a camera.
  • Use it to click on the application window, which you wish to capture.
  • The corresponding image will be saved on your desktop.

Once you have figured it out, and mastered how to use the above mentioned methods in Windows and Mac, you can utilize this key for a number of purposes. It is indeed a very handy tool, and one that has been around ever since computers were invented.

How to Become a Success Computer Programmer

You are reading this web page right now because of millions of lines of programming code, written to make the working of the world wide web, the web browser, and your operating system possible. The virtual world of the Internet and the graphic user interface of your operating system, is a product of programming code.

Becoming a programmer is all about learning to solve problems creatively and analytically. Every advanced electronic device has embedded software inside, which makes its working possible. Right from your digital watch, to your smartphone and your computer, embedded programming code, along with the embedded computer chips, make all the functioning of these devices possible. The unsung but well-paid heroes, who put in their logic, in creation of these software programs, are the programmers.

Becoming a Programmer

Know what you are getting into before deciding to become a programmer. What does it mean to become one? It is about creating an algorithm or a sequence of instructions, for the electronic brain of the computer (computer chip) to follow, in order to get a specific task done. To be a programmer is to think for the computer and make automation possible.

Develop Your Analytical Skills
One of the necessary skills is the ability to think on your own and solve problems. You need to train your mind to arrive at a solution to a problem, in the shortest possible way. An attitude to analyze a problem, formulate a strategy, and execute it with precision, to find a solution, is what is needed.

Learn Programming Languages
To solve a problem in computing, you need to develop an algorithm first and then translate it into a machine language for the computer to understand. The algorithm needs to be written in a programming language and then needs to be further converted into a machine level language, which your computer understands through an interpreter program. You need to know more than one computer programming languages, that are used for different purposes.

If your logic is sound, expressing it in any programming language, shouldn’t be a problem. Start with ‘C’ or Python, and then move over to object oriented languages like C++ and Java. You may need to learn newer languages for certain application like Perl or Lisp. You need to practice writing programs in various languages, to get a hang of it. All computer programs, including antivirus software and computer operating systems, began from scratch, as programming code.

Get a Degree in Computer Programming
For this IT job, although formal education is not necessary, it helps if you have it. You need to score well in your SAT tests, to be able to find a good undergraduate school, that teaches advanced computer science. It is one of the requirements to be a programmer that you get specialized knowledge of computer science, in the form of a postgraduate degree, where you can get access to some of the software programming pundits.

Begin a Start-up or Join a Software Company
Once you are qualified enough, you are ready to take on real world computing problems and enter the field of software development. You could either start up your own software company or join one that pays you a big fat salary. What is most important is to expand your skills, through exposure to computing problems of various kinds and on various platforms.

What makes a good programmer is the child-like zest to solve problems and riddles. It requires a creative bent of mind to solve complex problems. If you love solving analytical problems of any kind and enjoy the process of creation, you will love computer programming. I wish you all the very best.

The Best WiFi For Your Small Business

So what is the best WiFi for small business? First off, let me tell you what isn’t. It’s NOT a $50 wireless router from Best Buy or Future Shop. It’s NOT those cheap wireless extenders promising unlimited range.

If you want a great WiFi for your small business you need to spend a little cash. The same goes for any technology at your office (or home for that matter) as far as I’m concerned.

I work with small business every day and see this problem a LOT. My recommended brand of choice is Fortinet. With a Fortinet system you’re getting a commercial grade solution on a budget any small business can afford. Albeit a bit pricey, Fortinet or similar quality systems offer savings in the long term with robust features and long lasting reliability.

What you need will change slightly depending on your office layout and design but in general you just need to add more access points (as described below) in strategically placed locations in order to improve your coverage.

When installing a system like Fortinet you may need to replace your existing router. For many businesses this will be a major upgrade. For those that already have a commercial grade router in place, well, there are other options you can consider however it always makes for a more reliable solution if you have the same product brand end to end, especially when you have to call for support.

Make sure you get yourself the correct size router. Sticking with Fortinet as an example most offices of 50 or less can get away with a Fortinet FG-60D.

A great wireless solution will also give you a ton of network security for your office. Web filtering, antivirus and anti-malware protection, sophisticated packet filtering and inspection, VPN capabilities and much more.

Next you’ll need to choose the best type and quantity of wireless access points.

Now all of these options will need to be reviewed by your IT company to ensure the best selection specific for your business layout and coverage requirements however we typically install the 221C, which is a ceiling mountable smoke detector like unit and the 24D (regular looking unit that can be placed anywhere) models in most locations.

The best part of a commercial grade solution like Fortinet (and your IT people will love this) is that everything is managed from a single interface on the router. From the router login screen you can see and manage all wireless access points and essentially your entire network.

if you want a solution that’s going to WORK reliably, spend the extra money, do it once and get the right products. Something that is designed to work for a business, not some junk that you thought was a great deal at a local big box store. It will cost you less money and stress in the long run.

Buying Cheap Laptops

download (3)You will have to consider many things before choosing the right laptop. An average person doesn’t comprehend the hi-tech language associated with computers like WiFi connectivity, wireless, Flat Panel TFT and many other features as well. It is impossible for a lay man to cope up with the ever changing computer lingo which makes difficult for them to buy the right machine. As far as the laptops are concerned, it is advisable to avoid impulse buying.

In most of the cases people use to take help from the salesman, store managers and the sales agent. Though, they know about the technology but the quality of the advice which they would give is indirectly proportional to the commission of the salesperson.

You can discuss your needs and requirements with the people whom you trust like your friends and family. And, if you think that your family or friend’s advice is not enough, then look for some few PC magazines and review the latest technology and buying trends. In such magazines you may find out the regular sections of the customer ratings and even the surveys of the various up-coming products.

Before selecting a laptop you need to ask yourself some of the basic questions like:

1. What are the reasons for you to buy a laptop?

2. What is your budget?

3. Where you can buy?

If you are planning to buy it online then you can save significant amount of money but it will take some time for the delivery. If you have made the purchase decision then you should start collecting some basic information on the various models and the features offered by the different brands.

You may find different series and brands of the laptops that are built keeping in mind the needs of the customers. You should find out some basic range of laptops which comes in the affordable price range. One of the basic ways by which you can spot out the basic laptops is the processor speed. Usually, the laptops with the Intel‘s Celeron Processors or AMD’s Duron are the basic ones.

Ways to Connect Two Computers to Share Data

I am guessing that you have two computers at home and you are tired of transferring data from one to the other, through external storage devices. You may even be thinking of connecting the two of them together, for ease of using resources like printers or for multiplayer gaming.

Connect Using an Ethernet Cable
One of the simplest ways is the use of an Ethernet cable. For this networking method to work, you need to have a network card installed on both the computers. These cards are placed in the PCI slots of the computer. The card provides an Ethernet port to the computer, which provides a facility to connect it with other computers.

So, to connect two computers together using an Ethernet cable, make sure that both of them have a networking card and if they do not, then buy them and get them installed. Choose a network card which provides high data transfer rate. Buy an Ethernet cable. Plug one end of that cable into the Ethernet port of the first computer and the other end into the port of another computer. Make sure that you connect the cable properly, into the Ethernet port and hear it clicking into place on both sides.

Next, you must switch on the two computers and go to the network settings. I am assuming that you have a Windows operating system installed. In case you have any other operating system, run its equivalent network setup utility program.

Create a network using the ‘set up advanced network’ option, by logging in as the administrator. Make sure that you don’t forget to specify that you are creating this network without a router and directly connecting computers. Name the computer you have logged in as the ‘host’, while the other computer should be named as the ‘guest’ and do the same on the other one.

If you are asked to create a network setup disk, then create one and run it on the other computer to transfer the network settings. Turn file sharing ‘on’, when given a choice. Click on properties of drives or folders and enable their sharing on the network. That should do the trick and enable your two-computer network.

Connection Using a USB Cable
You can connect the two computers by another method, which is by using a USB cable. Here is what you need to do. First, you need to install the driver software for the USB cable. Insert the installation CD in the drive of one computer and finish the installation.

Choose ‘Link Mode’ in the installation process, which enables you to transfer files between the two computers. If you choose the ‘network mode’, it will connect the computer on a network. Repeat the procedure of driver installation on the second PC. Then connect each end of the USB cable, to the USB ports of each computer. With that done, your computers are linked for data transfer.

There are many other ways of connecting two computers together through the use of a router based IPV4 network. You can set up such a network at home and enjoy multiplayer gaming.

Ways to Set-up Wifi

If you are thinking of how to set up Wi-Fi Internet network at home, you need not necessarily call a computer technician. The task may seem confusing, but it is actually not. If you have the right equipment and some simple instructions, you can easily do the task yourself. There are some things that you would need for setting up wireless Internet at home. These things include a desktop or a laptop computer, a DSL modem, a wireless router, two ethernet cables, and internet access.

The first step is to make proper connections between the devices. Switch on the computer and the router. With the ethernet cable that comes in the router pack, connect the internet port situated behind the router to the modem. Take another ethernet cable, and insert its one end in the LAN port on your notebook computer or PC. The other end of this cable should go in the WAN or WLAN port on the router.

The router pack will also include a software CD, which you need to install on your computer system. Follow the installation guidelines as they come on the computer monitor. The next step is to configure the router. This is supposed to be done by typing the router’s IP address in the URL field, and hit ‘Enter’. The appropriate IP address would generally come along with the router. However, if you do not find it, you can enter ‘’ as the default address for a majority of routers.

You would be required to key in the user ID and the password for your particular router model. This information will also be available in the router manual. But if you cannot find these login credentials, you can visit ‘’, enter in your router’s model number, and get the details. Make sure that the wireless connection button on your laptop or desktop computer is switched on.

You now need to configure the Service Set Identifier (SSID), which does the job of recognizing your wireless network. The next step is to set a WEP or WPA password, which you need to use during logging into the wireless Internet network. Also, set up an administrative password that will prevent other users from tampering with the settings of the router. After this is done, click on save settings and ‘Apply’. You will be able to gain access to the wireless network after you restart the computer system. After rebooting the computer; click on the ‘Start’ icon, ‘Connect To’, and then the ‘Show All Connections’. If you have a wireless network set, its name will be included in the list at the top.

On the iPhone?

If you own an Apple iPhone and want to use Wi-Fi internet on it, you would need to do some settings. The first step is to go to the home screen and select the ‘Settings’ option. On the settings page, choose the Wi-Fi option. After doing so, it would take you to a page where you need to turn it on. You may select from the available networks in the list or choose another network.

If you want to choose another network, select the ‘Other Network’ option. When on the ‘Other Network’ page, a keypad will be displayed at the bottom of the screen, which you have to use to enter in the name of the wireless network that you want to join. If you want to assign a password to the new wireless network, you need to select ‘Security’ from the ‘Other Network’ page, and then ‘WPA2 Enterprise’. Tap on the ‘Accept’ button that comes thereafter. You can now put in the username and password on the ‘Other Network’ page. After all the configuration is done and all is set, on the upper left hand corner of the home screen, you will be able to see a Wi-Fi network signal indicator.

On the BlackBerry

The setup process in a BlackBerry mobile phone is somewhat similar to that in an iPhone. If you have a Wi-Fi compatible BlackBerry, select the ‘Manage Connections’ icon on the home screen. Then select the ‘Set Up Wi-Fi Network’ option, and click next. You would have two options, like ‘Scan for Networks’ or ‘Manually Add Network’. For an easy configuration, it is better to choose ‘Scan for Networks’. Choose from any of the available networks found, and enter security credentials if needed. After you select the ‘Connect’ option, the setup will be complete, and you will be able to use the selected wireless network.

On the Smartphone

Setting up a Wi-Fi on your smartphone (or connecting your smartphone to your already existing connection) is very simple. It gives you access to the internet without using your data plan. Remember to have the name of the network and the password. Then, switch on the Wi-Fi on your smartphone. From the wireless connection settings of your phone, search for the network name of the connection. After this, enter the password to connect to the network.

How to Make Private Wifi Antenna

download (2)Commercial Wi-Fi receptors cost you a bomb. There are alternate ways to make a Wi-Fi antenna at home that will not only increase the range of your network, but will also be very inexpensive. An antenna is nothing but a directional waveguide device that converts electrical power to radio signals, and vice-versa. Hence, pretty much any material that is capable, or can be made capable, of this function can be used as a Wi-Fi antenna.
A ‘cantenna’ is a directional wavelength reception device for long-range Wi-Fi. Ideally, a cantenna’s periphery is not strong enough to receive signals all by itself. Hence, cantennas are mostly used to extend a wireless network’s range or to improve reception over a distorted signal path. A cantenna can also amplify signals from 5 – 22 dB. While a ‘Pringles’ can is widely used for such setups, it is important to note that these cans are narrow in diameter and inappropriate for 2.4Ghz. Hence, for such a project, always use a can about 3.5 to 4 inches in diameter and approximately 6 or more inches in length.
Building a Homemade Wi-Fi Antenna using a Can
Materials and Tools
~ Can (about 3.5 inches in diameter)
~ Solder paste
~ 1.5 to 2 inches length thin copper wire strand
~ N-female chassis mount connector
~ Pigtail cable
~ Duct tape
~ Tripod stand
~ Drill machine
~ Soldering iron

  • Drill a hole in the can about a couple of inches from its base. Widen the hole according to the connector’s diameter.
  • The connector should just fit in; the hole should not be too small to get the connector in, nor too big so the connector falls off.
  • Set the adapter in the hole firmly.
  • Make sure it is set like how it is displayed in this image.
  • To the connector’s inside end (inside the can), solder a copper wire strand.
  • Be very careful when you solder the copper wire strand. This is how it must look like.
  • Plug in a pigtail cable into the connector outside the can.
  • Connect the other end of the pigtail cable to the Wi-Fi device/card. This will work only if you have a compatible Wi-Fi adapter. Hence, before proceeding, check the connector and adapter compatibility.
  • Mount the can on the tripod using duct tape, facing the Wi-Fi adapter. Once mounted and steadfastly in place, rotate the cantenna on its axis slightly, and adjust its tilt to work out the position in which it receives the strongest signal. This antenna has linear polarization, i.e., its rotation affects signal strength, positively or negatively. The tilt, though, is required in only very rare cases, and should be done carefully and only if necessary.
  • Once you shift the cantenna’s position to gain optimum signal strength, you can use your homemade Wi-Fi antenna!

Building a Homemade Wi-Fi Antenna using a Strainer
~ Strainer
~ USB Wi-Fi adapter
~ USB extension cable (at least 15 feet in length)
~ Duct tape
~ Wooden stick
~ Tripod stand

  • Using the USB extension cable, connect the Wi-Fi adapter to your computer. The cable’s female connector goes in your computer and the Wi-Fi adapter is inserted in the cable’s male port. If you haven’t found an extension cable long enough to position the antenna where you need, connect multiple cables together.
  • Using duct tape, attach the USB adapter to the handle of the strainer. If the strainer does not have a handle, attach a wooden stick to it using duct tape, and tape your adapter to the wooden stick.
  • Make sure your dongle is at a point where you receive signals at maximum strength. Temporarily place the dongle on the handle of the strainer and shift its place around the handle to find the hot spot.
  • Aim the strainer towards the Wi-Fi transmitter in a straight line and straddle a little to the left or right depending on where you are getting the best signals. Once you have figured out the exact spot which generates best strength of the Wi-Fi signal, mount the strainer on a tripod stand and get ready to use your strainer Wi-Fi antenna!
